Member of the Western or Indonesian branch of
the Malayo-Polynesian language family, used
in the Malay peninsula and many of the
islands of Malaysia and Indonesia. The Malay
language can be written with either Arabic or
Roman scripts. The dialect of the S Malay
peninsula is the basis of both standard Malay
in Malaysia and Bahasa Indonesia, the
official language of Indonesia. Bazaar Malay
is a widespread pidgin variety used for
trading and shopping.
